Dead Calm
It was one of those days on the lake when there wasn’t a breath of wind. The sky was clear blue and reflected on the water like a mirror. The heat, oh the heat. These days are rare, especially considering there wasn’t a boat in sight causing any ripples or wakes. Better get the camera out and document this, for it won’t be here again ever for me to see like this. At first, as a photographer, the reflections are the thing and then after a while what else can I do with this giant shiny object without disturbing the surface. Look around, find something and then create an unusual composition with only those elements. Actively frame the shot so a viewer doesn’t exactly know where this is, or how big or small this body of water might be. Make the viewer think and try to confuse their sense of stability within the scene. That’s the abstraction I enjoy giving the audience to play with in their minds.
